{"id":6029,"date":"2024-11-02T17:43:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T15:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/?p=6029\/"},"modified":"2024-11-04T11:31:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T09:31:30","slug":"the-alpha-bank-num-collection-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/en\/the-alpha-bank-num-collection-2\/","title":{"rendered":"THE ALPHA BANK NUMISMATIC COLLECTION 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>The ALPHA BANK Numismatic Collection<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>A \u201ctreasure\u201d of cultural heritage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6061 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-300x64.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-300x64.png 300w, https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-1024x217.png 1024w, https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-768x163.png 768w, https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-600x127.png 600w, https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px-1080x229.png 1080w, https:\/\/nm.nummus.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/alpha-bank-logo-transparent-1500x318px.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the context of the promotion of coinage as a carrier of Greek civilization, the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection features coins issued by peoples, cities and rulers who were on the fringes of the ancient world:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Celtic coins from western and central Europe, imitating primarily the coins of King Philip II and Alexander the Great of Macedonia<\/li>\n<li>coins of the Greek colonies founded in modern-day France (Marseilles), Spain (Emporion) and Romania (Callatis)<\/li>\n<li>coins issued by cities in North Africa, namely Carthage (Tunisia) and Cyrene (modern-day Libya)<\/li>\n<li>a rich series of coins of the Ptolemaic Empire of Egypt<\/li>\n<li>coins from Bactria (modern-day Afghanistan) and India, the easternmost point reached by the army of Alexander the Great.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, with the parallel objective of reconstructing the numismatic history of Greece, the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection also includes coins of the Roman and Byzantine eras, coins of the Ottoman period, the phoenix of Kapodistrias \u2013the first coin to be issued by the newly-founded Greek State\u2013, and King Otto\u2019s drachma, the monetary unit that was kept in circulation until 2002, when the national currency was changed to the euro.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 1960s, the Numismatic Museum of Athens, the only one of its kind in Greece, had a key role in the establishment of Alpha Bank\u2019s Numismatic Collection as a \u201ctreasure\u201d of our cultural heritage,\u00a0thanks to the good relationship between Yannis Costopoulos \u2014himself\u00a0a connoisseur and collector of ancient coins and an ardent advocate of the repatriation of Greece\u2019s cultural heritage\u2014\u00a0\u00a0and Manto Economidou, the emblematic numismatist and Director of the Museum for 30 years.
