As part of the celebration of the European Conservation Day, the Numismatic Museum is organizing three guided tours for the general public, lasting half an hour each, on the topic “Methods and practices of coin conservation”, on Friday 13 October (at 10:00, 10:45 and 11 :30) in the Museum’s laboratory. During the event, the public will have the opportunity to come into contact with the workshop area, to be informed about the methods and procedures for examination and maintenance of the coins applied to the Museum’s collections, to see photographic material from cases before and after conservation and will be able, for a while, under the guidance of the Museum’s conservators, to literally step into the position of the conservator and “listen” through the microscope to the mechanical cleaning process of a copper coin.
The European Conservation Day, an initiative of the European Confederation of Conservation Organizations (ECCO), aims to highlight the role of the conservator in the preservation of cultural heritage and was established in Greece in 2018 with the cooperation of the Directorate for the Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments (DSANM) of the Ministry of Culture, the Association of Conservators of Antiquities and Works of Art of Higher Education and the Greek Section of ICOM.
The guided tours will take place in groups of 4-8 people and participation in the activity is free. Seat reservation is required.
